Movie stars and influencers across the globe practically come from different origins. The stories recounting the rise to fame of many of Hollywood’s best inspire people to persevere and continue doing what they love. Actor and influencer Mohammed Wasim Altabbaa is establishing his name in an entertainment industry that is relatively new and unfamiliar to him.
More popularly known as Wasim, he was born and raised in the Middle East with a promising acting career on his palms. He would go on to become one of the most prominent personalities in the Syrian television industry earning awards that propelled his profession to considerable heights. He earned recognition after receiving the Murex D’or Award for two consecutive years as Arabic Star of the Year and Best Actor and Audience Award. Wasim was also named Actor of Generation in the 2012 People’s Choice Awards. He made appearances in television with these accolades, the ensuing path to stardom became clear for him. But life is not, at all, fair for many.
Living in a country frequented by armed conflict and territorial disputes, Wasim and his family were forced out of their hometown and migrated to the US. Along with many other Syrian refugees, Wasim had to start a new life and abandon the already flourishing career placement he had. Without the financial resources to kickstart his passion for acting, Wasim started at a restaurant. The money he saved little by little from his modest job led him to finish his studies as an IT Support specialist. With a newfound potential in IT, Wasim worked at Bellevue College in Washington as Technical Support for five years. He also took a job at tech giant Facebook doing the same.
Understanding the plight of his fellow refugees, Wasim began to volunteer in several causes, including MAPS Youth and volunteer jobs at Facebook, that intends to help Syrian refugees in building their own houses and give necessities like clothes, food, and medicine. Apart from these, Wasim partners with other non-profit organizations to feed the homeless and assist other refugees in restarting their lives in a new setting.
Wasim is doing these virtuous tasks with his wife, Asmaa Altamo. She works as a successful makeup artist for Givenchy. The two met online and started dating thereafter. After getting married, they started a YouTube channel together to document their life as refugees who are making a promising life in the US.
He plans to create an email account where organizations can directly connect with him and discuss volunteering matters. In his YouTube account, Wasim takes videos to capture the hardships of people who are victims of war – not to downplay their misfortunes but to communicate to the world that there are people who go out of their comfort zones to give hope.
The ceaseless effort to extend help towards the needy caught on to many institutions. Last year, Wasim was named The Best Volunteer for Syrian Refugees and earned digital acclaim as YouTube Silver Play Button awardee and Best Syrian YouTuber.
Gradually, Wasim gained the attention of many. He has appeared in many television networks and programs like The Rally For Victims of Civil War in Syria in Kiro 7, The Syrian Dream in MBC 1, and most notably, The Syrian Star of 2019 in ET Arabic. The re-emergence of Wasim in the television industry would later lead him towards the path he once took.
Digital entertainment platform Netflix took notice of Hasim’s journey and proposed to shoot an episode following his love story with his wife. The Halal Love Story, which releases this year will feature the couple about leading a meaningful life.
The mission to help others will continue for Wasim as he readies to set up SyrianRoots, a company geared to fund homeless Syrian refugees around the world by selling a wide array of merchandise. Indeed, the legacy of Mohammed Wasim Altabbaa is one that roots from a deep background and a profound sense of responsibility towards others who come from the same.
