Chief wellness officer and New York Times bestselling author Michael Roizen, M.D., and chief medical officer for the television show: Dr. Oz, have both written a book titled, ‘What to Eat When’. Science has proven that what we eat is just as important as when we eat. This ensures maintaining a good weight, prevention, and cure of some diseases, and guarantees a life full of energy and happiness.
The book is due to be released in December, however, the doctors have agreed to answer questions and give some insights into the content of the book.
Tell us about the science behind your approach to eating.
It’s been proving that humans have a biological clock, the circadian rhythm which releases chemical signals at appropriate times to help us wake, sleep, and do other things. Just as we have a biological clock we also have a food clock with a purpose similar to that of our biological clock. The food clock synchronizes our food consumption with chemical reactions in the body.
From a study of these clocks, the best pattern is to consume more food earlier in the day and less in the night. On the contrary, our bodies crave fewer calories in the morning and more at night. Studies have shown that eating more in the night leads to increased weight gain, chronic disease, and premature aging.
So the best pattern of eating we call chrononutrition is to eat earlier and less later. This makes for perfect alignment between food patterns and our internal clocks.
What are the guiding principles in this system of eating?
Changing a few of our eating habits will help align our internal systems. The two most important of all habits are:
- Only eat when the sun shines. Eating during the night is not healthy and as such, late and midnight eating should be drastically reduced.
- Consume more calories in the morning, at midday and less at night. The body works best if it has food stored up earlier for the day.
When to eat is also subject to change, because events happening in our lives cause subtle changes in our bodies. These changes will, therefore, warrant us to modify what and when we eat to be at our best. More details of this are contained in the book.
What benefits do you tell people they’ll derive from eating this way?
If people discard old eating habits and adopt this new pattern, it goes a long way to improve their overall health by curing diseases, or in some cases reversing it, assuring better sleep, more energy and productivity in their lives.
